Thessaloniki: What I did, What I Brought and What I Bought

As you may have read in my April favourites, we went to Thessaloniki at the end of April. It is super close, just under 300km away, so we went there by car. This post is not going to be a travel guide or anything like that, just because I cannot tell you where to go or what to see. I am not the type of person who goes to museums and landmarks on my first visit of a new place. I prefer to experience a city as a local, not as a tourist. That being said, here’s my experience:

How did we get there?

We drove by car. It took us about 4 hours because we stopped at the Shell petrol station for hot dogs (really, they have the best! They use some kind of a Polish sausage, which I don’t remember the name of, but it is insanely good).

Where did we stay?

We stayed at this amazing Airbnb in Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki. The host, George, is really awesome and although we didn’t get to meet him at all, he was available through all communication channels at all times. It cost us just over €60 (including the Airbnb fees and VAT) for 2 nights. The place was super clean and amazing for 2 people. It is not in the city centre, but the bus stop was a 2-minute walk away from it. The bus ride took about 15 to 20 minutes for €1 (do make sure that you have €1 coins with you. The machines on the buses do not give change; we learned that the hard way). A taxi at 2AM cost us about €8, which is not bad at all, and during the day would have been around €5. If you are using Waze to get to this specific Airbnb, triple check if you have the correct street, as there are two Lassani streets in Thessaloniki and yes, we went to the wrong one first.

What I brought with me?

I can honestly say that this is the first time I did not overpack. I took 1 pair of lightwash skinny jeans, these pants, a pair of nude high heels, 1 blush shirt, 1 top, this Boohoo dress (which I also wear as a top sometimes), this blazer (can’t leave anywhere without some kind of a 3rd piece) and I took off with a Zara dress and my glittery shoes. The bag I brought with me was this Mohito one, which I have been raving about in this post. And I wore everything but the top (because I realised the pants looked better with the shirt!)

The skincare was my Mixa gentle cleanser, a mini Garnier Micellar water, maxi cotton rounds, a Nivea face cream, Ziaja eye cream with goat milk, AltruistSUN SPF 50 sunscreen (which I reviewed here), and my Nivea lip butter in Macadamia and Vanilla.

For makeup I brought my Lancome teint Idole foundation, Maybelline Fit me concealer, Rimmel brow duo in Medium, HUDA Textured Rose gold palette, NYX Epic ink liner, Essence Princess Lash mascara, H&M cream blush in Autumn rust (which looks super dark and weird  in the pan but is gorgeous on the skin), a Maybelline lip gloss which I have no idea what it is, as it has rubbed off from sitting in my bag, a blending brush and a blending sponge. I forgot to bring a highlighter, which I still can’t get over.

Not too bad for a 2-night trip, is it?

What I bought?

Well… nothing. We did get olive spread (which I love and always buy when we go to Greece), and a pack of Mythos beer, which is about it. Forever buying food and beer.

What I did?

We did go for the Street Food Fest, which came to be a bit of a disappointment. We later found out that there were gyros in the afternoon, but there were a lot of people, too, and I can’t cope with crowds too much, so not going was a great decision. Instead, we had dinner in a nice taverna in the city centre, walked along the beach, saw a group of people dancing swing and a separate guy started doing that FLOSS dance from Fortnight, and was SUPER GOOD at it.

Honestly, I love visiting Greece. The moment I step my foot on Grecian land I feel relaxed and the vacation mode just snaps instantly.
