Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup review

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup review

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup is the most famous foundation in the world. It seems to me that everyone who has ever tried it liked it. I have seen it being praised both by people with oily or combination skin and by ones with dry skin. At one point I was convinced that I was the only person on the planet who hadn't tried it, but I was not ready to spend so much money for a foundation I was quite convinced I wouldn't like.

I prefer medium to light coverage and a luminous finish. And every time I have tried it on my hand something just wasn't sitting well with me.

I was very happy when I found out that there are mini versions of it.15ml for approximately 13 euro is quite the deal, especially when you keep in mind that this foundation is usually around 40 euro for 30ml. The mini version comes in 3 colours and luckily 2N1 is almost perfect for me (it could have been a little bit more neutral but I had to look very closely to see that)

Anyway. Nothing could have prepared me for what I felt the moment I first tried this.

My review

estee lauder double wear stay in place makeup review

The first time I tried it I decided to apply it with the brush I normally use for most of my foundations - real Techniques #221. However, it was too dense for this texture and the effect that I like. I was however pleasantly surprised by how it looked in those first minutes after I applied it - natural matte finish and with a quite small amount of it I managed to cover my whole face. The coverage is definitely medium to high. I decided against applying powder on top - it's stay in place makeup afterall, innit?

I applied it at around 7AM and around 10AM I was already having issues - I could feel it. I have used many bad and super heavy foundations in my lifetime, but nothing could have prepared me for this. It felt as if I had applied vaseline all over my face; my hair got stuck in it. Noooo. I realised that I had used a moisturizer which I hadn't used before that morning, so I thought that maybe they didn't go well together on my skin.

Day 2.

This time I used a stippling brush, which I thought would be a better fit for the texture of the stee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place foundation. It definitely was better. This time I also applied my normal base - Sephora Collection All Day Hydrator (you can read my opinion on it here). I also applied a teeeeny bit of powder on top, just to make sure that it wouldn't feel sticky.

The foundation definitely had issues with the moisturizer from day 1. This time I had no issues with it feeling too heavy on my skin.

I take my reviews very seriously (and I also hate throwing products away), so I tried multiple ways to apply this foundation in order to make it work for me.

I realised that I actually like it after I decided to use another foundation around the third week. My skin just didn't look as good and as fresh in the afternoon as it did with the Stay in place foundation. On my skin it looks best when I apply it with a sponge and without adding powder to it. Powder products like blusher, bronzer and highlighter apply very easily even without powdering the foundation.

What I found was that the Estee Lauder Double wear stay-in-place makeup cannot be built up and cannot be combined with other products. Every time I tried to do that I would always end up patchy.

With the right base it could probably stay 24 hours if you need it to, however, 14-hour wear was the most I did. During the day it didn't separate, it didn't vanish, it really... stays in place (I'm so much fun). My forehead usually gets greasy in the afternoon but even my natural oils couldn't make this foundation move. They combine perfectly to create a great luminous look. All in all, I like this foundation the most in the afternoon, after I've worn it for a while and the least the moment I have applied it.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place is definitely a foundation for long and hectic days. It definitely wouldn't be my choice for when I go out for a couple of hours for a coffee or drinks after work. I would use it for the office, for when I have a lot of walking, for shoots... things like that.

I don't think that this is suitable for dry and very dry skin types, but I know some people like it. Maybe it really depends on whether you like your skin looking matte.

Here are unedited photo and video of me right after application. I have a full face of makeup here - foundation, concealer, bronzer, blusher, highlighter... It never occurred to me to take a photo before I applied the rest of the products, so keep that in mind.

have you ever tried it? Do you prefer a luminous finish or a matte one?
